Hangzhou Read Gallery (讀畫樓) is the private collection of the Cheng family. The name "Read Gallery" reflects its founding philosophy: to approach art with the contemplative eye of the Chinese literati — reading paintings and objects as one reads poetry.
Over decades, the collection has grown to encompass ceramics, jade, bronze, Buddhist sculpture, and calligraphy spanning from the Neolithic period to the Qing dynasty. Particular strengths include kiln ceramics from across China's great dynasties and archaic jade — from the primal beauty of Majiayao painted pottery to the refined elegance of Song dynasty wares.
